In collaboration with experimental groups, we study a range of renewable energy systems. Specifically, we generate simulation and optimization models to, first, synthesize energy systems that employ novel technologies, and second, use modeling approaches to identify the major technological bottlenecks and economic drivers towards the adoption of these systems. Current projects, among others, include the synthesis and analysis of (1) biorefineries (Fasahati and Maravelias, 2018; Motagamwala et al., 2019; Wu and Maravelias, 2019; Huang et al., 2020), (2) solar fuel/chemical systems (Wang et al., 2018; Tountas et al., 2019), and (3) solar power generation and storage (Peng et al., 2019; Peng et al., 2020).
